I am often asked, "How long does it take to make a painting?". It's a great question and the long and short answer is "A lifetime.", because it's a process. Each painting becomes a record of time and a product of education and years of practice. It begins with building the stretcher, stretching the canvas and preparing the surface before the real work begins. Often I'll begin with a mood or time of day that I want to convey and that leads to a color palette and then the land and sky will take shape but the painting evolves and develops using experience, intuition and imagination. Most paintings are made in my home studio in Kennebunkport where I have a wood shop and storage.
